The Pathways below outline a traditional pathways to take throughout to their careers to gain experience and necessary education for each position. We understand that each persons path is different and below represents pathways that the Center offers including assistance through these pathways.
For our direct care positions our entry level positions are Clinical Assistants & Client Transporters. A Clinical Assistant works in our Detox/Withdrawal Management Program & within our Residential Programs. The position is very similar to PCA, DSP, or CNA roles, however, focus on Behavioral Health Care. From this position you can branch into different Direct Care positions. For us those position expand into three categories; Counseling, Nursing, & Medical.

As a Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) you'll work more hands on with clients on continuing care and continued sobriety. The Center employees only a few PRS directly, but Clinical Assistants who recieve this training get an increase in their CA wage when its complete, if there are no PRS positions available.
The Center doesn't directly pay for PRS training we do offer Development Time for employees to use while training. To be PRS certified you must complete 46 hours of training by a registered supervisor & be one year sober. Locally, Recovery Alliance Duluth & Fond Du Lac Tribal & Community College provide PRS training.
Alcohol & Drug Counselor operate in nearly every program the Center offers. Outpatient, Medication Assisted Treatment, Residenential, Detox, & Withdrawal Management Programs. There are many pathways to become an Alcohol & Drug Counselor, but ultimately it will eventually require a Bachelors degree. However, individuals can work on getting a temporary license (ADC-T) with Associates degree.
To recieve a ADC-T you must have completed 18 semester credits specific to Alcohol & Drug Counseling and have an associates degree. Additionally, they would need to have completed 880 hours of interning specifically in Alcohol & Drug Counseling. This temporary license requires supervision and must be renewed every year and can only be held for five years. After the five years the ADC-T must have their Bachelors and pass the complete Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LADC) Exam.
For those with a current Bachelors Degree in a related field, can go through an exemption process to work as an LADC. The exemption process is 440 hours of supervised training with a current LADC.
The Center has numerous interns come through the Center each year and has extended offers of employment to many. For internal employees we offer two means of tuition assistance for those interested in becoming a LADC. We provide internal funding through our Success in Education Program & grant funding through MN Department of Labor & Industries Dual-Training Grant program.

Item Link List Item 3Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) operate within our Detox & Withdrawal Management, OBOT, and Clearpath. LPNs in Detox & Withdrawal Management work in acute care enviorement. They often work with Clinical Assistants and Counselors on providing care for clients.
OBOT and Clearpath are the Center's Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Programs. LPNs in this envoirment are often referred to as dosing nurses, but additionally provide client education, observation, and perform a variety of work directly with our Assistant Medical Director regarding patient care.
LPN's require a certificate degree from an accredited insitution and completing an exam to be licensed in Minnesota. Course lengths vary depending on the insituiton, but vary between 2-4 semesters, plus any prerequisite coursework. The Center offer tuition assistance to employees through both our internal Success in Education Program and grant funding through MN Deptartment of Labor & Industries Dual-Traing Grant.
Registered Nurses (RNs) operate within our Residential and Detox & Withdrawal Management programs. RNs in our Residential program our responsible for managing the medical add-on for our Residential programs. They manage medications, provide TMA training to Clinical Assistants, and provide direct patient care regarding their physical health. They will work directly with clients, Counselors, and the Treatment Director when developing treatment plans for clients within those programs.
