Interns & Students

Interns & Students

The Center for Alcohol & Drug Treatment loves to provide opportunities for those interested in the treatment of Substance Use Disorders. We currently offer a variety of opportunities for interns pursing careers in Social Work and Alcohol & Drug Counseling. We also offer learning opportunities by providing rotation experiences for Nursing, Medical, and Pharmacy students.  Below you can find more information about what about each learning opportunities we currently offer.

  • Interns

    Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor:

The Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment provides comprehensive training experiences for LADC interns where students can meet requirements for all 12 core functions.  We offer practicum placements at multiple locations, offering exposure to a variety of levels of care and treatment focus.  Interns will obtain the knowledge and understanding of how substance use disorder treatment integrates with co-occurring service provision; learn to administer comprehensive assessments and clinical screenings; attend and co-facilitate both therapeutic and psycho-educational groups; sit in on individual counseling sessions; practice evidence based counseling approaches with clients; create person-centered treatment plans; attend multidisciplinary meetings to discuss cases and discharge planning; develop clinical documentation skills that are compliant with DHS mandates; learn about community resources and the referral process; provide client and family education; develop de-escalation and crisis intervention skills; and much more.

Licensed Social Workers & Licensed Graduate Social Workers:

The Center offers similar internship opportunities for LSW and LGSW interns.  These interns receive the same experiences as our LADC interns, but receive additional clinical supervision from a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW).

All interns will work directly with a Program Director, licensed Clinical Supervisor and/or Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor throughout the course of their internship.  Each intern leaves with the necessary skills to succeed, and many of our interns choose to accept positions at the Center.  Our interns are paid, starting at $17 an hour, and should there be a gap in the completion of the internship and board approval of licensure, they are offered other positions within the Center in the interim.

Each intern leaves their practicum with the Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment with the necessary skills to succeed.

  • Nursing

Currently we provide Nursing rotations for students attending Lake Superior College & the College of St. Scholastica.

    Licensed Practical Nurses:

We currently provide rotation experiences in our Addiction Medicine Clinic for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs).  Students receive a tour of Detox & Withdrawal Management, Clearpath Clinic (OTP), and our Office Based Opioid Treatment program (OBOT), where students meet with Program Directors, Nursing Staff, and other clinicians. Students shadow with LPNs within the Clearpath Clinic (Opioid Treatment Program). LPN students will come out of this rotation with an understanding of what occurs within the Addiction Medicine Clinic model, increased knowledge and experience with Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), and detailed knowledge of the role LPNs play within Opioid Treatment Programs from both a medical and clinical perspective. Our rotations with LPNs provide unique insights into the role of the LPN in the treatment of Substance Use Disorders.

    Registered Nurses:

Registered Nurses (RNs) complete rotations in our Residential Programs.  Students shadow our RN Supervisors who provide the medical care and education to the clients in our residential treatment programs.  Students assist the RN Supervisor during intakes of new clients which involves a medical exam, medication review, and medical screenings.  Students will observe how the RN Supervisor trains Clinical Assistants in becoming Trained Medication Aids (TMAs). RN students will shadow the RN Supervisor throughout their rotations, learning how to collaborate with counselors and program directors on developing treatment plans for clients and the role an RN plays in this type of treatment facility.

  • Medical Students

Medical students receive a tour of Detox & Withdrawal Management, Clearpath Clinic (OTP), and our Office Based Opioid Treatment program (OBOT), where they meet with Program Directors, Nursing Staff, and other clinicians.   Medical students receive valuable Stigma and Bias Training from a Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LADC) and have the opportunity to work directly with a licensed counselor during individual meetings with clients to learn about personal stories of addiction and how recovery can be impacted by experiences with those within the medical field.  Medical students are also present for psycho-educational groups.  Our medical students also spend time with the RNs and LPNs, gaining valuable insight regarding the medical needs of clients in acute withdrawal.  Medical students who have the opportunity are welcome to come back for additional rotations with our organization.

  • Pharmacy Students

CADT offers a 5-week patient care advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) elective for University of Minnesota students in the final year of their Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. Students have the opportunity to provide supervised comprehensive medication management (CMM) services with our clinical pharmacist faculty, Dr. Keri Hager, as well as shadow and collaborate with our other CADT interprofessional team members and patients across several CADT programs (Clearpath (Methadone), Withdrawal Management/Detox, Outpatient, OBOT (Suboxone), and the Men’s and Women’s Residential Programs). Students develop and provide education for staff and patients while on rotation as well as gain valuable knowledge about addiction and its treatment from both the treatment team and our patients.

The mix of activities will be based on the student’s personal objectives and interests and the availability of specific opportunities during the time you are on rotation. The student will have the opportunity to participate in a wide array of activities including:

    • clinic practice activities - providing comprehensive medication management for people with substance use disorders & shadowing interprofessional team members
    • didactic teaching & preparation
    • research
    • committee and service opportunities
    • administrative duties
    • collegiate/faculty/other & meetings.

Fostering Development & Learning

We continuously want to provide opportunity for staff to develop. The Center has initiated programs fostering education and began partnering with programs designated to assisting our staff with going to school. Along with having a training platform provides our teams an opportunity to continually learn.

  • Success in Education Program

Providing professional development opportunities for our staff is of paramount importance to the Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment.   CADT employees are eligible to apply for the Success in Education Program (SEP).  This program is for those pursuing a License for Alcohol and Drug Counseling (LADC), or those pursuing a Registered Nurse (RN).

The Center began the Success in Education Program as a way to assist our staff with getting the education needed to become a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) or Registered Nurse (RN).  We recognize that both of these roles are in high demand across Minnesota and have responded to this need by creating a pathway for our team members. The tuition assistance program provides financial aid for required coursework in either the RN or LADC programs, while still being able to maintain employment.

  • Dual-Training Grant

The Dual-Training Grant is a program developed in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (MN DLI) and the Department of Higher Education. The Dual-Training Grant is an application-based program that provides employers with tuition reimbursement for their employees’ school costs. The MN DLI identifies career opportunities that are in demand across Minnesota and allows employers to apply for grant assistance for their employees for one of these in demand jobs. The grant provides up to $6000 each academic year and participants can enroll in the program for four years.
